How to Style a Sweater for Spring

Cool mornings, warm sunny afternoons and cool evenings – does it get any better than that? That’s what I love about Spring and really, Fall too depending on where you live. Layering breezy sweaters is one of my favorite go-tos this time of year. Ever wonder how to style a sweater for Spring? It’s easier than you think and spoiler alert: the right fabric and layers are the key!

I’m going to show the same sweater (Tradlands Jude Pullover in Birch) 7 ways. In the last few months this sweater has gotten more wear than anything else in my closet. It’s become my early morning companion.

1. Denim Shorts

Sizing: the Jude Pullover is made to have an oversized fit. I’m wearing my usual size small. The honeycomb knit pattern makes it breathe really well and the cotton is incredibly soft. As soon as I touched this sweater I knew I’d be wearing it on repeat for years to come.

Note on Tradlands stock: If you see that your size is already sold out, don’t worry! This piece is a bit of an investment and worth the wait. Add it to your wishlist, save up & watch for when they bring it back. It’s typically a Spring & Fall piece.

2. Monochromatic

I’m such a sucker for tone on tone outfits right now. The monochromatic trend is so easy to wear using pieces you already have in your wardrobe. (check out more ideas for styling your existing wardrobe here and here). Adding the scarf with small pops of clay red ties so well with the peach earrings and warm tone in the sandals.

I have this bodysuit (most comfy bodysuit ever!) layered under the sweater so it stays tucked and is great for when the afternoons get warm. Side note: the bodysuit is black and you can’t see it through my white jeans – that’s pretty great for white jeans!

3. Layered

I love distressed jeans for Spring, especially paired with over-sized tops. This is my favorite outfit formula – great jeans, over-sized top, or in this case two layered, simple necklace + statement earrings. Change out the shoes for whatever you have going on throughout the day – mom life (sneakers), meeting (pointed flats), date night (heels), coffee w/friend, or errands (sandals or mules). This is my favorite way to style a sweater for spring.

4. Dress

Spring means dress season has begun, but for those of us in cooler climates, this can be tricky. I live in WI. It snows in May sometimes. A sweater over a dress is a must!

I simply tucked the bottom of the sweater in all around to define my waist a bit. Another trick is to wear a belt and tuck the sweater up into the belt (the sweater can fully cover the belt).

5. Straight leg “mom jeans”

This time I went with black washed jeans in a straight leg. I love the contrast of the light on top / dark bottoms. I went a little dressier with a pointed toe flat – I had an informal meeting the day I wore this outfit. The accessories help take the whole thing up a notch.

6. Shorts

I really love shorts and a sweater. It’s a great way outfit for transitioning from cool Spring mornings to warm afternoons back to the cool evenings. There’s a lot of flexibility here too – you can get the same feel in a skirt. Swap sandals for mules to keep your feet warmer or socks and sneakers.

7. Lounge Pants

However you wear it, a sweater for Spring makes an easy, cute outfit. The key is to pick a sweater that is lighter weight and has a loose knit. Layer a natural fabric under like bamboo, linen or organic cotton and you’ll be comfy all day long.

Do you find yourself still reaching for cozy layers in the Spring?
